Following numerous renovations since the 16th century, it was finally completed at the start of the 19th century. The sculptures were designed and created by Remigio del Mármol; its 139 water spouts pay homage to the monument’s central figure, Neptune. The lion in the first basin allows water to gush from his jaws, attributed to the neo-classical sculptor Álvarez Cubero; The fountain has been declared a national monument.
